• Tävlingsrapport från EFPT

Här kommer en tävlingsrapport från EFPT tidigare i år skrivet av Erik Håkman Håkman on tour, vol. 1 The EFPT has seen a few very unfortunate event cancellations this summer, which made for a less than desirable competition season. With just one event remaining it all comes down to who throws down in Israel beginning of November. Greece Let’s back it up though and start from the top. Me and Niklas Stråhlen set out to go on a mini tour through Europe, entering the very first event of the year taking place in Milos, Greece, after which we would continue on to Sardinia, Italy, for the second. On arrival in Greece we had our minds set on a few days of practice before the first day of competition, especially since I had been stuck with final exams for more than a solid month without time to surf. We quickly found out that that would not be the case as the winds shone with their absence - very unusual for this time of the year, apparently. Apart from the lack of wind the event was perfectly arranged at the Milos Beach resort just by the water with rooms for all the riders, a nice restaurant and even a mini night club spot on the beach all you needed was just right there. Red Bull sent their DJ in a huge army car - with turntables in the trunk - to provide entertainment for the spectators lining up on the beach to watch the top of European freestyle go head to head on the water. The heat The first day was windless but the morning of the second saw a light breeze that seemed to pick up slightly as the day went. We were put on hold, and had good time to prepare for competition. Soon enough though, the wind increased enough to let us start. I was in the second heat, the first was Adam Gavriel from Israel - who strangely but awesomely enough speaks perfect Småländska. Waiting outside the vast event area I was in the zone, started nailing Konos (Switch and regular), Shakas and even an Air-Funnel. Only thing was that I was not quite sure when it was time to start the actual heat. The beach was so far away that I could not tell whether the flags were blue, green or pink. Caught slightly off guard I saw my opponent (Filippo Bestetti from Italy) going for it as the heat suddenly started having gotten my confidence back I dropped my original game plan and decided to go big the first thing I did. Seeing a perfect chop line up I went for a Shaka which did not work as before and had my sail dig deep into the water. Loosing time I decided to stick with all of my safe moves, that eventually got me where I wanted to be. Finally claiming that Shaka on the last run was probably what saved my day. As I got back to the beach I heard the announcements, and was totally psyched when I was called out. First EFPT heat ever in the bag, and it was good! Shortly after my heat the wind went away completely, which had all of us put on hold once more hoping that the third and final day would let us finish the single elimination. The tour The last day gave us some even lighter winds, which did not really suit my small equipment, and I was a little bit too underpowered to pull out my big moves against opponents on bigger boards. Nevertheless, I went out with a top 9 result and watched Nikke and Adam work their way into the top 4 before the wind put a stop to the show and we squeezed into the Brazilian teams’ van to embark on our trip to Sardinia, Italy. Me, Nikke and Adam worked some real-life Tetris skills and were soon all fit in between 7 boards and 25 sails together with Chico Bento and Edvan de Souza (from Jeri in Brazil) and sped off to Italy to catch a ferry to Sardinia. During our well needed sleep we even went through an evacuation drill, which was announced like a real evacuation. Scared the shit out of me as we woke up to sirens, voices shouting in Italian from the speakers, and captain to be Nikke told us the procedures Leave your stuff and run. Coming up to the main deck we were relieved to see a calm blue-bird Italian morning, and fortunate enough to get to watch the two Brazilians running with their luggage like the boat was about to sink. Wouldn’t have missed that for anything... Sardinia Arriving in Sardinia after one hell of a trip we were pretty happy to get on the water for a 40 knot 4.0 session, which eventually turned into nothing when the actual competition was to be started the next day. The forecast was possibly even worse than the one we had experienced in Greece, which left us with no choice but to sit it out. The parties were awesome though, with the Italian beach culture as a main theme and the various surf clubs as the location. Samsung sponsored the event, so to get some action on the water a tow-in session was organized first time experience for me, but it worked out all right with a landed Air-Funnel. Due to the very unfortunate conditions Sardinia left us without a result, but that’s life when you depend on the weather. The first part of the tour had been awesome fun and a good experience even though I would have liked to get some more surfing. Right now training is on for the closing event of the season.
